Overview

Of the almost 11 million people living in Haiti, nearly 60% of the population lives under the poverty line. This is due to the fact that over 40% of the working population is unemployed. Two thirds of the population do not maintain a formal job; furthermore contributing to the problem of poverty within Haiti. Around 40% of the population is illiterate, a direct relation to the crumbled public education sector within the nation. Many students cannot afford to attend any of the private schools, causing many children to forgo a formal education all together. All this and more contribute to Haiti being the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere. - Facts established by the CIA​
